AI for hotels and travel: inquiries, reviews, and revenue
Travelers say they want always-available AI help. Canadian operating adoption remains low. Between those facts is a useful playbook for independent hotels, tour operators, and travel agencies.

Travel AI is moving faster on the guest’s screen than inside the average operator. That creates a practical job: make policies, availability, and service information reliable enough for both humans and assistants to use.
Demand is loud; operating adoption is quiet
The American Hotel & Lodging Association’s 2025 report, produced with Accenture, says 87% of surveyed travellers wanted AI advisers to provide reliable, specific recommendations and more than 87% wanted them available anytime. Seventy-nine percent wanted AI to manage tasks such as negotiation or query resolution. These are stated traveller preferences in an industry report, not measured booking or hotel-profit results.
Statistics Canada found accommodation and food services had the country’s lowest business AI-use rate in 2025, at 1.5% under its definition of using AI to produce goods or deliver services. That category combines hotels and restaurants and will not match a survey asking whether one manager uses a chatbot. It does show that operational deployment remains far from universal.
The opportunity is the gap: guests increasingly arrive through AI-assisted research, while many independent operators still maintain rates, policies, and local information across disconnected pages and inboxes.
Answer from live facts or hand off
For a hotel, the assistant can answer property facts, accessibility information, parking, check-in rules, pet policies, amenities, and transport options—when those facts come from an owned, current source. For a tour operator or agency, it can collect dates, party size, preferences, and constraints, then draft options for an adviser.
Availability, final price, cancellation terms, visa requirements, weather disruption, and supplier status must come from live systems or a human. The safest design distinguishes information from a transaction: it can explain the published policy, but only the booking engine confirms what is available at that moment.
Reviews and messages: useful volume work
AI can classify reviews and messages by property, topic, severity, language, and service-recovery need. It can show that “cleanliness” complaints are concentrated in one room type or that airport-transfer questions spike before certain arrivals. The manager should read the underlying examples before changing an operation; sentiment charts can hide sarcasm, translation errors, and a small number of severe incidents.
Drafted replies are low risk when they acknowledge the actual issue, avoid personal data, and do not promise compensation the system cannot grant. A serious safety, discrimination, injury, chargeback, or privacy complaint needs a person immediately.
Hospitality automation should make the handoff feel informed, not make the guest fight harder to reach a person.
Revenue management needs guardrails
Forecasting demand and recommending rates predate generative AI. A small operator can test forecast or pricing support, but should preserve hard controls: minimum and maximum rates, inventory rules, event review, channel parity obligations, and the person who can override the recommendation. Never let a language model calculate a rate from a chat; let it explain a rate supplied by the approved system.
Measure forecast error, occupancy, average daily rate, revenue per available room, direct-booking share, cancellations, and overrides. An association between AI use and a strong revenue month does not prove causation when season, events, renovation, or channel mix changed at the same time.
What we could not verify: no independent study provides a dependable AI-driven revenue lift for an ordinary independent hotel or travel agency. Most public results come from platforms, large chains, or consumer-intent surveys.
The honest bottom line
- Clean the facts first. Policies, accessibility, amenities, supplier terms, and local information must have owners and update dates.
- Automate intake and classification. These remove inbox work without making travel promises.
- Keep live transactions deterministic. Availability, price, cancellation, and itinerary status come from connected systems.
- Escalate service recovery. The assistant should recognize seriousness, preserve context, and reach a person.
